When I designed this pattern, I designed it differently than many of the ones already out there. I wanted it to be true and proportionately correct to a real American flag. The first (and biggest) obstacle was the star field. I knew I didn’t want to sew them on, but pentagons don’t fit together….it’s impossible. But I found a way! My next challenge was to make the stripes look more like fabric. Crochet can be airy, especially with taller stitches, but I found a stitch that works perfectly and makes it look like one piece of fabric! My biggest accomplishment is that the star field is the right dimensions to the size of the stripes, and it is as proportionately correct as I could possibly get it. The result was an afghan that will fit a full size bed.
