Inspired by a that small chrysochroa beetle with beautiful colors. Lots of problem solving and experimenting went into this piece. I made several samples and models to clarify the process and jigs to match fit the walnut, beech and maple.
Mixed media includes: legs- sculpted polystyrene and fiberglass matte over a metal armature; body- book-matched black walnut, curly beech; thorax- bird’s-eye maple; head and eyes- carved bass-wood, dichroic glass cabachons and onyx beads; antennae- form-bent and carved walnut veneer layers. Iridescence is achieved by air-brushing metallic and interference paints.
